Darwin and surrounds
Slow down and soak up the tropical vibes of the Northern Territory’s capital city. Darwin is full of history, outdoor adventures and colourful characters.
Beyond the sparkling harbour and fascinating history, it’s all about outdoor adventure in Darwin. Try cage diving with crocodiles, deep sea fishing or waterhole hopping through Kakadu National Park. The city itself is home to a fascinating military history with numerous historic sites and museums to explore, a vibrant nightlife and foodie culture inspired by its proximity to Asia. Be sure to visit the popular outdoor cinema perfect for enjoying the balmy evenings. Slow things down with a visit to the nearby Tiwi Islands, where nearly 90 per cent of residents are of Aboriginal descent. Be treated to a traditional smoking ceremony, discover their beautiful art and see how they make colourful silk-screened fabrics and cap it all off by watching a local match of the favourite sport - Australian Rules Football.
When to visit
From May to October, the dry season weather is warm and pleasant with sunny days and cooler nights. It’s the perfect time for exploring the buzz of the city. Grab a takeaway dinner from the markets to enjoy as you watch the sunset on Mindil Beach. From November to April, the wet season is warm and tropical, with summer thunderstorms. Travel in the wet to experience flowing waterfalls and smaller crowds, but be aware that some tourism operators will close for the season so planning ahead is essential.
