Join more than 900,000 happy people at Sydney’s annual agricultural fair.
Held each year around Easter (March/April), the Sydney Royal Easter Show celebrates Australia’s cultural and rural traditions for two action-packed weeks of carnival rides, exhibitions and entertainment. Known locally as "the Show", it was first held in 1823 to bring the country to the city, and continues to be a fantastic family day out. Don't miss the Grand Parade, which has been a Show staple since 1907. Three parades showcase Sydney Royal Competition winners, including animals, producers and champion wood-choppers in an impressive, choreographed display.
How to get there
Although there are several large public car parks at Sydney Olympic Park, the best way of getting to and from the Show is by public transport. Trains and buses run to Sydney Olympic Park from the city centre, with the cost included in the Show admission ticket.
Meet the animals
Ever wanted to milk a cow, hold a duckling or feed a baby lamb? For many, animals are the real stars of the Show. Follow the Animal Walk to see more than 14,000 animals – some of which are uniquely Australian – compete for a prized Sydney Royal ribbon. The animal pavilions feature demonstrations and shows every day, and the Farmyard Nursery offers a unique opportunity to get up close to more than 800 Australian farm animals. Get your hands dirty with a cup of animal feed. The ADVANCE Sydney Royal Dog Show sees thousands of dogs go paw-to-paw for the prestigious Best In Show title, and each afternoon you can see puppies flaunt their way around the ring.
Get your thrills at australia’s largest carnival
The Sydney Royal Easter Show is home to Australia’s largest fairgrounds, including the Coca-Cola Carnival and Kids Carnival. Thrill-seekers can get their adrenaline racing on rides such as the Mega Drop, where you’ll experience a terrifying 45-metre (148-foot) free-fall, or Mayhem Manor, where zombies run rampant. There are also plenty of family-friendly rides for the young and young-at-heart, including the Super Slide and Sea Circus. Purchase your ride coupons at booths around the Carnival or online before you go.
Sample Australia’s best produce
The Woolworths Fresh Food Dome is home to De Costi Oyster & Tyrrell’s Wine Bar where you can taste fresh prawns and Sydney rock oysters while sipping award-winning Tyrrell’s Wines from the Hunter Valley wine region. Foodies will have the chance to meet the producers, talk to experts and taste medal-winning produce at the ticketed Sydney Royal Talk & Taste sessions, which run daily throughout the Show. And a visit to the Sydney Royal Easter Show wouldn’t be complete without seeing the District Exhibits. These towering displays contain more than 10,000 pieces of the country's best fruit, vegetables and grains arranged in spectacular designs.
Stock up on showbags
Don't leave the Sydney Easter Show without stopping at the Showbag Hall. The showbag is an Australian invention, dating back to the early 1900s, and today Showbag Hall offers more than 350 different showbags. There’s something to suit every age, taste and budget, taking cue from movies (Star Wars, Frozen, Hunger Games), television shows (Breaking Bad, Adventure Time) and Australian sports.
