Sydney and surrounds
A city that needs no introduction, Sydney doesn't disappoint on wow factor. From its spectacular harbour, pristine coastline, vibrant culture, and picturesque surrounding rural and coastal landscape, there's no shortage of things to do and see.
If you really want to immerse yourself in Australia's urban culture, Sydney is the place to do it. Whether you're after the beachside vibes of Bondi with its population of surf loyalists, or you'd rather explore the cobblestone-lined streets of the Rocks steeped in fascinating convict history, the city has it all. Better yet, jump in a car and head out on an adventure to the famous wine region of the Hunter Valley, north-west of Sydney. Travel west to see natural wonders like the Three Sisters in the Blue Mountains, or visit one of the quaint coastal towns along the south coast via the township of Berry. Sydney is Australia’s most geographically diverse state, so we guarantee you'll never be bored.
When to visit
This vibrant city shines all year with spectacular events including blockbuster musicals, brilliant theatre, thrilling sports, and Vivid Sydney’s festival of light, music and ideas. If it's hot weather you're after, the summer festive period officially begins in December and lasts through March, marking Sydney's peak visitor season. Travelling during this time will treat you to the world-famous Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks, loads of beach time, and a hot list of outdoor events like the St. George OpenAir Cinema and Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. Autumn (March to May) can still experience weather that's warm enough for a swim, with the addition of family-friendly events like the Royal Easter Show. Between June and August, the weather cools down to an average temperature that sits between 8.8-17°C (47.8-62.6°F), with the highest rainfall recorded in June. Go ice skating on Bondi Beach, visit the Orange Winter Fire Festival, run the City2Surf half marathon, or take in a film as part of the Sydney Film Festival. Spring in Sydney is a lovely warm and dry time to enjoy such events as kite flying at Bondi Beach, Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney Craft Beer Week and Art & About.
