Hidden gems of Brisbane

Discover some of the best hidden coffee and retail gems in Brisbane.

By Anywyn Howarth

Brisbane is packed with cool cafés, craft beer pubs and boutique stores. Some of them are only known to locals and regular visitors. It’s a great feeling to be leaving a city knowing that you had the chance to get to know it a little more intimately than otherwise. Here’s a list to get you more closely acquainted with my city.

John Mills Himself

John Mills Himself, Brisbane, Queensland

With two street entrances, one from below Archives Fine Books on Charlotte Street and the other down the laneway off Elizabeth Street, John Mills Himself is every city explorer's dream. Be greeted by a selection of craft beers, sweet pastries, coffee blends and more hot chocolate flavours than you can poke a stick at. The venue is limited as far as seating goes, however the secluded tables at the far end of the venue provide the perfect setting for writers and people-watchers. If you are musically inclined, the upright piano at the front is for anyone brave enough to give a public performance. This urban hideaway hole is truly a hidden gem.

Felix For Goodness

As aesthetically pleasing as it is delicious, Felix for Goodness is a cafe by day, and winebar and restaurant by night. They make all of their food from the best locally sourced organic produce. With an ever changing selection of seasonally inspired plates and a thoughtful selection of Australian beverages, it’s the perfect spot to treat your tastebuds.

The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen

The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen, Ascot, Queensland

Located about 100 meters away from the entrance to the Ascot Racecourse, rests The Stables. This craft bar and kitchen is the epitome of culinary joy, with it's menu of carefully selected meals that'll leave your tastebuds dancing. The bar is also host to an eclectic range of beers, wines and spirits.

Violent Green

Violent Green, Brisbane, Queensland

There are food gems and then there are shopping gems. Sharing their Albert St loft space with Apartment, Violent Green, houses a curated range of respected Australian and international fashion labels. The store has developed a strong cult following among Brisbane’s style set, and strives to stay true, stay young and not be dictated to. This is one of my favourite shops to visit on a Saturday afternoon.

Showroom, Brisbane, Queensland

Showroom is a concept store featuring an eclectic curation of design wares made by local and international artisans. Perched in the upstairs loft of a beautifully restored 1880s building shared with La Bon Choix, Showroom, is the ideal shop to find gifts for your friends and treasures for yourself.
