Day 3: Bruny Island

Bruny Island tours: Located about an hour south of Hobart, Bruny Island is a treasure trove of local produce like cheese and oysters.

What’s the best time of year to visit Hobart?

Hobart is a great destination year-round, with summer (December to February) and autumn (March to May) offering great weather and a buzzing calendar of events.

Summer (December to February): Hobart's peak season brings pleasant temperatures of 11.5 - 21°C (52.7 - 69.8°F). It's the perfect time for outdoor activities and al fresco markets.
Autumn (March to May): Autumn tends to be calm and sunny, with average temperatures between 8.9 - 17.3°C (48 - 63.1°F). Foliage begins to change, turning shades of red, orange and yellow.
Winter: (June to August): Winter brings chilly weather, often falling between 5 - 12.3°C (41 - 54.1°F). It's the time to warm up at wineries and attend winter festivals like Dark Mofo.
Spring (September to November): Spring warms up to around 7.8 - 16.9°C (46 - 62.4°F). Though it tends to be the rainiest season, Hobart is also Australia's second-driest capital city (after Adelaide).

Do I need a car in Hobart?

You don’t necessarily need a car to enjoy Hobart itself, but hiring a car will give you the freedom to explore the city's surrounds and attractions further afield.

Exploring Hobart without a car: Hobart's city centre, historic Battery Point and the waterfront are all easily walkable. Public buses, taxis and rideshares are also available.
Visiting Mona and kunanyi/Mount Wellington: You can reach Mona museum (open Thursday to Monday) via the Mona Roma ferry, and the Mt Wellington Express Bus will take you to the summit of kunanyi/Mount Wellington.
Nearby destinations: Within just a couple hours of Hobart are destinations worth visiting – including Bruny Island, the Huon Valley and the Tasman Peninsula. While guided tours are available, hiring a car will give you ultimate flexibility.
Car hire and parking: Car hire is available from Hobart Airport (HBA) and the city centre. Many hotels offer parking, and on-street parking in plentiful (both metred and free).

What should I wear or pack for Hobart?

Hobart’s weather can change quickly, even in summer, so it’s a good idea to dress in layers and be prepared for a mix of conditions.

If you’re heading up kunanyi / Mount Wellington, you’ll likely notice it’s much cooler and windier than down in the city. Comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket, sun protection and a reusable water bottle are all great essentials.

Being prepared means you can stay comfortable and enjoy everything from waterfront strolls to mountain views.
