When to go

Plan to visit between August and late October when migrating humpback whales and calves pass the island en route to warmer waters.

Essentials

There are no sealed roads on Fraser Island and most of the off-road driving is on sand, so driving anything other than a 4WD with high clearance is strongly discouraged.

Fun fact

Pristine Lake McKenzie is a ‘perched lake’, which means – sitting well above the water table – it’s comprised of only pure rainwater.

Essentials

Whales aren’t Fraser Island’s only resident wildlife. Wongari (dingoes) live wild on the island and are incredibly significant to the land’s traditional owners. If you see one, leave it be and don’t feed it.
